Students' Award

Haoxiang Zhang is an artist deeply engaged in sculpture and cross‑media work, and he is a widely recognized educator in the field of art education. In 2011, his undergraduate graduation project won the Silver Award at the Contemporary Art Institutions Annual Nominee Exhibition held at Today Art Museum, presented by artists Chen Danqing and the current Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts president Qiu Zhijie. He later studied in the United States, earning an MFA in Sculpture from the Academy of Art University in 2015 and another MFA in Sculpture from the University of Houston in 2019.

His artistic practice and curatorial experience are rich and varied. In 2013 he served as the local event planner for a Chinese gallery at the Miami Art Festival, successfully selling a work valued at $50,000 to Philip Munger, son of Charles Munger. The same year he worked as executive curator for the “弘艺敦谊,情系中华” international calligraphy and painting exhibition hosted by the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco and the Chinese Arts Association of San Francisco. In 2014 he curated an exhibition in Beijing’s 798 Art District for professors from the Academy of Art University and the Rhode Island School of Design, building an exchange platform between Chinese and American art‑education communities. In 2015 he co‑curated the exhibition “A Few Hamlets” with Dalian Art Museum. In 2016 he organized a retrospective of paintings by the late San Francisco Art Institute professor Julius Hatofsky at the San Francisco Art Center. During his time abroad he also organized multiple exhibitions for American artists and art students in China, fostering collaboration between young artists from both countries. His own works have been exhibited at Today Art Museum, the 798 Art District, the Miami Art Festival and other institutions.

Haoxiang also excels in education and public art advocacy. He serves as a judge for the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards and sits on the Harris County Department of Education’s expert committee, helping to formulate guidelines for art education, competitions and exhibitions in the Houston area. He maintains long‑term collaborations with Art League Houston and the University of Houston School of Art. From 2017 to 2019 he taught sculpture and multimedia courses at the University of Houston and organized exchange visits to China for the university’s faculty and students, deepening educational dialogue between the two countries. In 2017 he was invited to give lectures on Sino‑American art exchange at Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts and Sichuan Fine Arts Institute; in 2018 he established an academic partnership with Sanmuju in Jingdezhen. Since 2019 he has devoted himself to extracurricular art training, adhering to the belief that art education should be bold and innovative, and encouraging students to explore installation, digital art and other new media; in 2021 he founded FLUX School of Art to share his international artistic and educational experience with children and families in Houston.
